Purpose.

The purpose of this Trust is to promote and support the pursuit of wilderness and outdoor education and adventures by its beneficiaries.

The Ryan Outdoor Leadership Trust is premised upon the principles, goals and objectives of the National Outdoor Leadership School (“NOLS”) which was founded in 1965 by Paul Petzoldt

The outdoors, and wilderness challenges, offer a dynamic environment within which to develop or enhance competencies, confidence and humility.  The Jean and Tom Ryan Outdoor Leadership Trust (ROLT) embraces opportunities and programs that offer real physical and emotional challenges in a supportive peer culture; programs that require positive risk taking through outdoor adventure; programs that inspire young people to step out and try new things.

The wilderness challenges and that education can be pursued through established outdoor leadership programs, including, but not limited to, NOLS, Outward Bound, Rainier Mountaineering, EXUM Guides, Jackson Hole Mountain Guides or the like, and through programs and adventures developed by the grant recipient.
